Marine Weather Platform Locking Cylinders: Design Review
JW’s marine cylinder presentation includes a locking-cylinder application for a vessel weather platform. This article brings together the listed specification envelope and the design considerations for a drawing-based project review. The term locking cylinder identifies the application in the presentation. It does not by itself describe the complete platform locking or safety arrangement.

Reference Specification Envelope
The bore, rod, stroke and pressure entries below are individual maxima from the product presentation. They are not a single combined rating. Materials, rod treatments and seal brands are listed as options, with the final selection subject to the application review. The operating temperature range requires confirmation for the selected materials, seals and working conditions.
| Parameter | Reference information |
|---|---|
| Bore | 160 mm maximum, listed separately |
| Rod diameter | 100 mm maximum, listed separately |
| Stroke | 1,200 mm maximum, listed separately |
| Working pressure | 36 MPa maximum, listed separately |
| Working temperature | −50 °C to 100 °C, subject to configuration review |
| Cylinder material examples | Q345E, 316 stainless steel |
| Piston rod material examples | 304 and 316 stainless steel |
| Rod surface-treatment examples | Chrome plating, nickel and chrome plating, ceramic treatment |
| Seal brands listed in the source | TRELLEBORG, PARKER, MERKEL; selection to be agreed |

Define the Locking Function and Interfaces
The application topics below are engineering considerations, not a mandatory enquiry checklist. Your design drawings are the required starting point; operating conditions are helpful if available.
The arrangement drawing defines the cylinder’s role in the platform mechanism, such as movement into position or engagement of a locking feature. The review considers the relevant assembly interfaces and design function; information on the operating sequence is helpful if available.
Force, pressure, stroke, pin, mounting, rod-end and port requirements are reviewed from the design drawings. For a replacement, this includes the installation envelope and dimensional interfaces. Operating speed and frequency of use are helpful context if available, not separate mandatory enquiry fields.

State the System Requirements Explicitly
The review considers the equipment designer’s defined response to loss of pressure or power, together with any position-monitoring, interlock, valve or sensor interfaces. These functions cannot be inferred from the cylinder name or illustration. The proposed cylinder scope is confirmed against the equipment design.
Temperature, seawater or splash exposure, hydraulic fluid and storage conditions can influence the design review when this information is available. Project approvals and inspection records are coordinated with the customer. A listed stainless steel grade or surface treatment is not a substitute for an agreed corrosion-protection specification.
Prepare the Enquiry
For a replacement, supply your design drawings. Service history and the reason for the change are helpful if available. Review the drawing-based replacement cylinder process. The engineering and quality page explains the review and documentation topics to agree before manufacture.
Start Your Enquiry with Your Design Drawings
Enquiries are welcome in any format. Please email your design drawings to info@jwindustrialsolutions.com; drawings are required for quotation and manufacture. You do not need to repeat information already shown on the drawings. Operating conditions, including the working environment and frequency of use, are helpful if available. A dedicated specialist will follow up by email.
