Replacement Cylinders and Second-Source Evaluation

When an existing cylinder is discontinued, repeatedly fails, or no longer fits your cost or delivery requirements, send JW your design drawings. Our drawing-based replacement hydraulic cylinder page explains the review, quotation and customer-approval process. Drawings are required for quotation and manufacture; operating conditions and service history are helpful if available.

Hydraulic Cylinder Product Range

  • Welded cylinders: custom configurations for industrial machinery, steel processing, press equipment, and OEM material-handling systems.
  • Mill-duty cylinders: high-load cylinders for continuous industrial duty cycles, with NFPA/ISO-aligned configurations available by specification.
  • Tie-rod cylinders: modular, serviceable designs across a broad range of bore sizes.
  • Telescopic cylinders: multi-stage configurations for projects requiring an extended stroke within a limited retracted installation space.
  • Components: precision cylinder barrels with bores up to 2,000 mm, plus nickel-plated, chrome-plated, or HVOF-coated piston rods. Seal options include Hallite, Parker, Merkel, Trelleborg, NOK, and DZ.

Cylinder Configuration and Duty: What the Terms Mean

Construction: welded or tie-rod
These terms describe how the cylinder structure is assembled.
Action: single-acting or double-acting
These describe whether hydraulic pressure produces motion in one direction or both directions.
Stage arrangement: single-stage or telescopic
Telescopic cylinders use multiple extending stages; the arrangement affects available travel and retracted space.
Duty and dimensions: mill-duty, long-stroke or large-bore
These describe operating demands or dimensions, not mutually exclusive construction types.

The appropriate combination is reviewed against your design drawings and intended application. A product label alone does not establish fit, load capacity or service suitability.

Mill-Duty, Long-Stroke and Large-Bore Hydraulic Cylinders

Custom Mill Type Hydraulic Cylinders for Steel Mills and Presses

Mill-duty and mill-type cylinder projects start with the equipment function and design requirements shown on your drawings. For rolling, positioning, clamping and press-machine applications, JW reviews the proposed cylinder arrangement for the specified service. Cycle frequency, surrounding heat, contamination and maintenance access are helpful operating context if available. The term mill duty does not, by itself, define a pressure rating or confirm compliance with a particular standard.

Long-Stroke Hydraulic Cylinder Projects

Required travel is not the same as the space available for the retracted cylinder. A drawing-based review considers mounting points, installation dimensions, rod and support configuration, and the operating conditions together. There is no need to repeat information already shown on your drawings in a separate enquiry checklist. Where retracted space is limited, explore our custom telescopic cylinder capabilities. Feasibility is confirmed for the complete installation, not from stroke length alone.

Heavy Duty and Large Bore Hydraulic Cylinders

Heavy duty describes the demands of the application; large bore describes a cylinder dimension. Neither term alone establishes the working pressure, force or service life. JW reviews large-bore and heavy-duty cylinder manufacturing requirements against your design drawings, with project-specific testing and delivery confirmed in the quotation and approval process.

Marine Hydraulic Cylinders

JW reviews custom cylinder requirements for marine cranes, steering gear, windlass and other shipboard equipment. Exposure, rod protection, seals and any project-specific inspection or approval requirements are considered for the intended service. See our marine equipment application overview.

Values shown on this drawing: 700 mm bore, 300 mm rod diameter, 3,500 mm stroke, 300 bar nominal pressure and 450 bar testing pressure. These are drawing-specific values, not a standard specification or operating rating for all JW cylinders.

This reference is not an approval drawing for another installation. Dimensions, pressure ratings, load conditions and applicable requirements must be confirmed for each project. For your custom quotation and production, your design drawings are required; operating conditions are helpful if available. JW submits detailed drawings for customer approval before production.

Mining Hydraulic Cylinders

For mining equipment, the cylinder arrangement is reviewed with its mounting, movement and operating loads. Dust, abrasive contamination and access for maintenance can influence protection and service requirements. Explore mining equipment applications; the construction and dimensions are confirmed for each drawing-defined project.

For a welded configuration, review our custom welded hydraulic cylinders for industrial OEM equipment. Submit drawings through the hydraulic cylinder RFQ page.

In-House Manufacturing Capabilities

Custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing starts with the approved cylinder assembly and component drawings. JW coordinates machining, welding, assembly and inspection around the agreed drawing revision and order requirements. Bore, rod diameter, stroke, mounting interfaces and specified pressure requirements are reviewed together; a component size or a product-family name is not a complete cylinder specification.

  • Precision honing for controlled bore geometry and surface finish
  • Advanced CNC machining, including 5-axis machining centers for critical components
  • Automated robotic welding for repeatable weld quality
  • Assembly, inspection, and hydrostatic pressure testing before shipment

Hydraulic Cylinder Quality Control

Our multi-stage inspection process covers raw-material certification through final pressure validation. Quality controls may include full material and heat-record traceability, CMM and gauge dimensional verification, visual and non-destructive weld inspection to applicable requirements, rod and bore surface-finish measurement, and customer-specified third-party inspection support.

Every completed cylinder assembly is hydrostatically pressure tested to its rated working pressure before shipment. Material certificates, inspection reports, and test records can be supplied with the order according to project requirements.

Before production, the approved drawing revision and agreed inspection scope establish the acceptance basis. If a requested witness inspection must take place during manufacturing, arrange it with your JW specialist before that stage. See the drawing approval and order process and our engineering and quality information.
